How Healthy is your heart?

It’s the scary time of year where the month of love has passed and we are now approaching a quarter of the way through the year!!! 
Not only was it Valentines Day last month (we hope you all nailed the “Love Posture" - please refer to Danny’s previous blog), but on the 19th of February, it was Heart Awareness Day and coming up in the last week of April is Heart Week. 
So here, at SYO, we want to check in and make sure all hearts are warm and beating well! 
Sadly, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, affecting one in six Australians, or 4.2 million Australians (1) 
Some signs your heart might not be so healthy & to see your osteopath or medical health practitioner immediately
  • Chest pain (most common)
  • Pain in the shoulder that spreads down the arm 
  • Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
  • Dizziness, blurry vision or lightheadedness
  • Increased fatigue
  • Jaw pain, snoring and increased perspiration. 
Here are some heart-felt tips toward maintaining a healthy heart.
Aerobic Exercise is Key
Aerobic exercise results in deeper breaths and consequently increases the work required for the heart to pump more blood to our muscles. 
It raises our how heart rate, which of course burns more kilojoules! So while the sun is still is out I’d recommend going for a walk or jog around the tan, but a swim in the ocean or pool, cycling to work or dancing are all great forms of aerobic exercise
Diet
I know we are always constantly reminded about the food we consume, however here is just a friendly reminder of some heart specific foods
  • Fish-  high in omega-3s- eg, salmon. Tuna, herring 
  • Berries- full of fibre and phytonutrients
  • Two handfuls of vegetables everyday, whole grains and lentils
  • When you’re feeling vulnerable try and opt for dark Chocolate- Here at SYO we love our 75% + cocoa
